Chapter 4.5

Regret (Kyoko Tachibana's POV)

I am really tired today as I moved a lot because I was forced to play a lot of basketball.

Everyone was so serious.

And because of that I might have a sore muscle tomorrow.

As usual, I am heading to the gym after school.

I opened the door to the gym and found out that no one is around.

I look closer and I noticed that Kato is sleeping on the mat used for PE.

I wonder if he is tired from PE.

I quietly approach him so as not to wake him up.

His sleeping face is so cute.

I'm very excited to see Kato's sleeping face, as I couldn’t always see it.

I thought about drawing doodles on his face.

While I was thinking that, the door to the gym opened.

It was Rina and her friends.

“Kyoko, listen to me, just now... what? Who's that?"

“Uh, I think it’s Kato sleeping."

“What? Seriously?"

Rina and her friends are gathering around Kato, who is still sleeping.

I have a bad feeling about this.

“Let's look what’s inside his bag while he's sleeping.”

Rina said so and began to open Kato's bag.

Rina and her friends were rummaging through Kato's bag in the middle of the gym.

I was curious too, so I watched them from the side.

“What's with this pencil case, is he a junior high school student?”

They are saying what they want to say.

“What's this? It looks like a painting."

It seems Rina had found something.

It was a sketchbook-like paper with paintings of sceneries and people on it.

Some of the paintings looked like those naked women that is depicted on Roman sculptures and artwork.

“Seriously? They are naked, this is so gross."

Suddenly, I heard movements from the mat.

Kato seemed to have woken up.

"Is this yours?"

Rina asks Kato, while holding a painting in her hand.

Kato looked as if he had seen something he did not want to be seen.

"Yeah, but..."

"Eh~ Seriously, this is hilarious"

"Are you the one who made this? You're just wasting your time, so just stop"

Rina then scattered the paintings she was holding on the floor and begun stomping on it while laughing.

The sound of her laughter echoed through the gymnasium.

I couldn't laugh.

"And this painting, this is Kyoko, right?"

Rina thrust the painting she was holding at Kato.

The picture looked just like me, with long black hair, long slit eyes, and earrings.

"No, you're wrong"

It wasn't me, even though it looks so much like me.

"Hey Kyoko, tear up this painting."

Rina handed the painting over to me.

I look at the painting that I received.

I knew it, it was really me.

Kato this is me, isn't it? I look at him as if I want to say it to him directly.

But why did he lie?

Was it because he was embarrassed? Or is it because he hates me?

I didn't know what to think anymore.

"Kyoko, what are you doing, hurry up!"

Rina rushes me.

I wonder if Rina and the others will hate me if I don't tear up this painting here.

I'm worried about Kato, but Rina and her friends are also my important friends.

Besides, if I tore at least one of the paintings, they would laugh at it and we will still stay friends.

That was how I felt but it seems I’m just looking for an excuse to tear it.

I held the center of the paper and tore it vigorously.

The painting, neatly torn in two, fell to the floor.

A moment later, as the paper was flying in the air, I saw Kato's face.

I knew from his face and I realized that it’s a painting I shouldn’t have torn.

But it was too late.

The painting was torn into two pieces and fell on the floor.

"A-hahaha! What the hell are you planning on doing on this horrible painting?"

I was the only one who regretted doing it.

Rina was tearing the painting into even smaller pieces, and everyone but me and

Kato were laughing at the scene.

“You guys are crazy.” Kato muttered.

"......Huuuuuuh?"

The gymnasium became really quiet and the air freezes at Rina's reply.

Kato grabbed his bag and ran out of the gymnasium.

All I could do was watch.

I wondered if I was one of the "you guys are crazy" he was referring to.
