Chapter 7

The Town of Saigas

That's how I reached the town in no time.

A wall that seemed to be 20 meters high is surrounding the town. It was probably to prevent monsters from invading the town, but it's quite wide for a wall for a normal city perhaps this is the royal capital? Also there is a line of people in front of the gate, and it seems to be quite crowded.

In case you are wondering if I can speak the language normally. A few moments ago I just had a short conversation with an old man in front of me while I was waiting in line, but for some reason I could understand him just fine.

According to the old man this town is ruled by Viscount Belmondo, and it is called the Town of Saigas and it is part of the Belmondo domain. It seems to be a relatively large town in this country. Although it is not as big as the royal capital, it is a major transportation hub, and is said to be quite lively for a regional town.

The forest I came to is called the Morgale Great Forest, which is located between the border of the neighboring country, the Landerick Empire, and it is said to be a magical place where monsters live. Wait were all the refugees trying to cross such a place?

"Next in line, this way please."

A little while after the old man was called, it was my turn. I was told that I needed to show my ID card at the gate, but if I lost it, they would issue another one after questioning me at the gate. I heard that it is not so difficult to enter the city if you are not a criminal.

I heard that they already accepted some refugees, but most of them ends up in the slums and become homeless. It seems that there are not many places where a refugee can work right away. If you are in need of a job, you can visit the Olivin Chamber of Commerce. So, even if I fail selling the potion, I can still make a living for the time being.

"Hmm? Are you alone?"

"Yes, sir. I'm from the Empire."

"You're a refugee from.... and a child all alone. Do you have any ID?"

"I don't have any. The only thing I have on me now are potions."

"What? Potions? If you don't have an ID card, we need to ask you some questions at the guard station. Hey! Please take charge here! Also please call Captain Melvin!"

"Roger that!"

Two young soldiers came out of what appeared to be a guard area. The soldier who was handling me seemed to be their boss. After exchanging a few words, one of them ran away. Then, the soldier took me into the staff room and made me sit on a chair.

It was a bleak room with only a desk and a chair. There is a door that leads to the next door, so I guess the back of the room is their resting place. I guess this place is like an interrogation room. Also they said that they were going to check if I'm a criminal.

"Sorry about the cramped space. My boss will be here in a little while. We'll issue the permits after that, but let me ask you a few questions first."

"Yes, sir. Go ahead."

"First of all. Do you have any parents or anyone to take care of you?"

"No, I don't. My parents have been dead for quite sometime now, and my mentor the one who raised me, died before I left the country."

"I see. You said earlier that carrying potions with you, was it made by this master?"

His response is a bit light when I said that my parents are dead. Is this a normal thing in this world? But still, all of a sudden he suddenly wants to talk about the potions that I'm carrying. It seems that potion making is indeed a rare profession just like Meriri said. I guess it's better to say now that I can make up until the rank D potion.

I'll have to sell them in the future. Let's just say that what the master made was the rank C potion and I used it when I was attacked by the one-horned rabbit. I believe that it would be a good advantage for me to say that I was under a master who can make a potion that can completely heal a wound in an instant.

"No, I made it myself. Before I came here, I was attacked by a one-horned rabbit and used the potion my master had made."

"A one-horned rabbit? You mean the Narwhal Rabbit? How did you survive? Was it just a scratch?"

When he heard that it was a rabbit that attacked me it seems that he was shocked to hear what happened to me, it seems that the one-horned rabbit is really dangerous if so why is it living so close to the city?

"No, I have a hole in my stomach. Look, I still have a small tear here, right?"

"No, no, no, don't try to trick me, okay? That hole is so small that it's almost nonexistent you know? Wait! Don't tell me that you cured yourself using a potion?

"Yes I used a potion to treat my wound, after all my master was a great potion maker."

Rank C potions is a given, so I would just say that my master was able to create up to Rank B potions. Should I say that I know how to make them too, but I don't have the right tools at the moment?

"You, that's..."

*Knock, knock*

"Excuse me, you must be the boy who is carrying a lot of potions."

"I'm Melvin, and I've been entrusted to be the head of this unit. I'd like to talk to you, but first, may I ask your name?"

A fresh, handsome man in armor knocked and came in. When he entered the soldier sitting in front of me stood up and saluted. I tried to stand up too, but the fresh-looking man stopped me with his hand, so I sat down again without saying a word.

I think he is about 20 years old. He then put a crystal with a pedestal on the desk and sat down next to the soldier.

So I guess now the real interrogation is about to begin. Should I act like a child as much as possible?

"It's nice to meet you, I'm..."

Wait I don't remember my name. Oh that's right! The god from Earth said that he tinkered with my memory so I guess he also made me forgot my own name on purpose. I can't think of a name or anything on the spur of the moment. I don't even know a name that fits in with this world world. That's right a name on Earth..., uhmmm.... maybe a Japanese name... uhmmm... Yamato, okay, I'll go with Yamato. From today on, I'm Yamato, the potion maker.

"...My name is Yamato. I came from a village on the other side of the forest."

"The other side of the forest, huh! Did you come alone here, Yamato-kun?"

"No, everyone in the village went into the forest, but when we were attacked by monsters, I got separated from everyone. I somehow managed to escape the forest with the medicine my master gave me to ward off the monsters, but when I got out of the forest, the effect seemed to wear off and I was hit by a Narwhal rabbit, but I managed to recover with the potion my master gave me.

When I showed him the hole in my clothes, he looked at me and gave me a serious look.

"Can you show me the potion you say you have, Yamato-kun?"

" Yes. Here it is."

"Is this something that your... ...master gave to you?"

I gave Melvin-san the ranks F, E, and D potions I made before I came here, and he seemed a little surprised to see the rank D potions. Well, the rank D potions won't be able to cure any major injuries, and if he thinks that it was made by my master then my masters dignity and skill will be belittle. Besides, if I say I can't make those kind of potion it will be a problematic for me in the future if I decided to sell them.

"I made it myself."

After hearing my words Melvin-san stared at me straight in my eyes, then he turns his gaze to the soldier next to him. After making sure the soldier nodded, he looked back at me again.

Now I look like a kid, and I'm told that potion makers are rare, so they will think I'm really great because I can make potions at my age.

"It looks like you're not lying. But did this potion really cure that injury?"

"No, I healed my injuries using a rank C potion given to me by my master."

"Rank C! Do you still have that?"

"No, I don't have it anymore. I used it when I was hit by the one-horned rabbit".

"I see. That's too bad."

Is a rank C potion really great? Well I guess it is, because it healed the hole in my stomach in an instant.

"Are rank C potions rare?"

"Yes, there are makers in royal palace, but they are so few in number that they don't come to this area. Of course, rank D potions are also rare. I will take you to the guild of commerce after I finish the formalities for your pass."

Even rank D potions are rare? I can make at least five of them, but I'm still not sure about how many I can do per day.

I guess I will try to find that out after renting an inn after visiting the guild, I will make the maximum number of potions I can do today then I will also do that tomorrow just to make sure.

"Gohon, then I will ask you a question for the purpose of issuing a pass. Why did you come to this city, Yamato-kun?"

Just as I thought the previous questions and answers had nothing to do with them issuing me a pass! Well, at least I learned that the rank C potions are rare.

At any rate, my objective is to sell the potions in this town and make a solid foundation for my livelihood.

"I hope to make a living selling potions in this town and to live here for a while. I don't intend to do anything that will cause trouble for others."

"Okay, now please touch this crystal."

I did as I was told and touched the crystal as if grasping it with the palm of my hand, but nothing happened.

"Nothing happens. So there's no problem. It glows red when a person who has committed a crime in the past touches it. Yamato, you have no criminal record, so you can pass through without any problem. Gail, please complete the procedure. I will continue to escort Yamato-kun to the Commerce Guild."

"Yes, roger that!"

The soldier stood up again and saluted. After that I was led by Melvin-san out of the guard station and safely into the city.
