Chapter 8
Exclusive Receptionist
After we left the guard station, Melvin-san and I enter the town through a large gate. The town is much more bigger than the one I had imagined.
As I had expected when I saw the city walls surrounding the town, the town was huge. I was surprised at the walls surrounding such a large town, but once inside, I saw a castle-like mansion on top of a hill. The big mansion on the top of the hill even though it is behind the center of the town it is still completely visible. It seems that from there, you can see all of the city.
I asked Melvin-san about it, and he told me that Viscount Belmondo, the lord of this city, lives in that mansion. He explained that the town is a good place to live, as it is properly ruled and because of that the viscount very popular with the residents.
He is a soldier, so I wonder if he wants to have a potion maker in this city. I'm told there are a few other apothecaries besides me, so I guess they're not that desperate.
Melvin-san seems to call potion-makers [apothecaries]. When I asked him if there were any potion-makers besides me, he replied, "There are a few apothecaries". It seems that potion makers are called apothecaries in this town. I was ashamed because of Meriri didn't told me that potion makers are called apothecaries in this world.
"This is the merchant's guild."
As I walked along the streets looking around, I saw a building that was much larger than the surrounding buildings, then Melvin-san came up to the door and told me so.
I can see a lot of people going in and out of the guild, and on either side of the building, I could see a warehouse-like area where horse-drawn carriages could enter. If count Belmondo is in charge of the commerce of this town, I believe he must be making a lot of money.
I wonder if they wouldn't take advantage of me because I only brought a few potions. I guess it would be better for me to take it to a smaller store.
"Melvin-san, I only have a few potions with me right now, not enough to have a business meeting at such a big merchant guild. Wouldn't a smaller store be better?"
"No, you need permission from the merchant guild to sell potions. Basically, you're not allowed to sell directly to stores in this town. As there are problems with the quality of the potions and their management. And it is illegal to do business in the city without a guild certificate issued by the merchant guild.
"I see. So that's why you brought me here. If I'd sold my potions without a guild certificate, I would have become a criminal."
"Ha-ha-ha. It won't come to that. Unless there is something wrong, If you do that you'll probably get a little warning. I guess that's all for me then. When you go inside, you will see a counter at the back of the building, so please complete the formalities there. If you have any problems, you can visit me anytime. I will help you as much as I can."
"Thank you very much. I will rely on you in case of emergency. Again thank you very much for your help so far. Good luck with your work."
He is a good man. I heard that he is also in charge of protecting the city, so I may see him around town. I should make sure I have a solid foundation for my life so that I can repay him in some way when the time comes. I bowed to Melvin-san as he left with his hands raised, and then I headed for the guild.
My goal is to live a safe, stable, and comfortable life. I don't want to make a mistake and live a safe life. There is no better way to live than to be able to live each day with a modest income and enough luxuries to make ends meet.
Considering that I am forced to work long hours on top of a low monthly salary at a black company, a little inconvenience is not an obstacle.
As far as I saw in the city, this world is a little more advanced than the Middle Ages. There seemed to be no electricity or scientific products, but the food and daily necessities are sold at the stalls were reasonably well stocked. The town seems to have developed and the economy is booming, to the extent I can say that Melvin-san is a good leader and because of that the people's faces were full of smiles.
Well, I heard there are slums and so on. So I was reminded not to go to the west side of the town. I have no desire to go into danger place as I want to live a safe life. So I will just ignore the flags, and live my life so as not to trigger any events.
Now then, my first ordeal. is to get a guild certificate and sell my potions.
With determination, I opened the door of the merchant guild and enters.
The interior of the guild was a large hall with chairs and tables on either side for business meetings, and some of the seats were in use and at the back of the room,
there was a counter lined up with nearly twenty receptionists behind them.
As I felt outside, this place seems to be very prosperous.
"Welcome. How can I help you today?"
As I proceeded a little further down the hall, I was overwhelmed by the number of people and the luxury of the interior, I was then approached by a female staff member who was nearby.
I wonder if it I stand out because of my looks. Well, let's just do this.
"Well, I'm here to have my guild card issued and to sell potions."
"Then, please proceed to window number 22. Please come this way."
As I walked after the smiling staff member, I noticed that the people around me were looking at me. I saw quizzical glances, price gouging glances, and I even heard them saying "potion".
Did I did something wrong? I had heard that potion makers are indeed rare. Maybe they are keeping the identities of the potion makers a secret? The female staff member is not leading me to a counter but a private room. Did I really messed up?
"Maybe it wasn't a good idea that I told you that I was here to sell potions?"
I asked the staff member as soon as I entered the room, but she looked a little annoyed and then shook her head.
"No, there is no problem. It's just that it's been a while since a customer had said that they're here to sell potions and as you have notice almost all the merchants around are trying to gauge you. Some may even approach you on your way out, but don't take them seriously, okay?"
"Because you have to go through the guild to sell potions, right?"
"Yes, so you knew about that. Some merchants are guilty of criminal behavior, so please be careful on what you do also please fill out this form."
After being told something scary with a smile, I was led to a face-to-face desk, when I sat down on a chair, I was handed a document. I was worried about my ability to read and write, but it seemed that there's no problem. I don't know if the original owner of this body knew how to read and write or if it was Meriri who gave that to me as a freebie, but still I was very grateful.
All I had to provide was my name, age, and the products I was selling. The only problem is the age.
"Uhmm, I'm sorry but I don't know how old I am?"
"Please write 14 years old. If you go to church later and take the coming-of-age ceremony, if you can perform the ceremony, then you will be 15 years old but if not then you can be 14 until you can perform the ceremony. Also if you complete the coming of age ceremony, you need renew your guild card."
It seems that there are other people who don't know their age. Well, if you don't have a family register, it wouldn't be strange if you don't know your age.
By the way, the coming of age ceremony is available to those who turn 15 years old. The church keeps a record of those who have undergone the coming-of-age ceremony, so it is possible to find out their age from that point on.
When I finished filling out the form and handed it in, I was offered two crystals. One is a magical tool to check if someone has a criminal record, it's the same kind of crystal in the guard house, and the other is a magical tool used to issue a guild card by dropping a drop of blood on it.
It seems that in this world, instead of the development of science, magical tools have developed. It seems that magic stones are used instead of electricity, also the lighting in this room is also a magic tool using magic stones. It seems that many people like me are seeing magic tools for the first time because they are not yet used in the countryside and farming villages.
So do I look like a country bumpkin in their eyes?
"Please take this, this is the merchant's guild card. This ID is the proof that you are a member of the merchant's guild also you can pay with this card if you deposit money in the guild in advance. Also please remember that you can't used it in stores where there isn't a magical tool or if the seller doesn't also have an ID from the merchants guild."
Oh, so this is like a cash card. You can't make payments to an individual if they didn't belong to the guild. It seems that magic tools are pretty advanced. I think some of those tools are even better that the tools that we have in the modern world.
The guild card looks very simple, the only thing written on it was my name and my guild rank. Currently I'm at F rank.
"As your rank goes up, you are allowed to have your own store and you can purchase more goods. Also, those with higher ranks are given priority in purchasing products. Ranks start at F and goes all the way up to A. At rank D, you are allowed to have a stall, and at rank C, you are allowed to have a store. Also permission on selling product may vary depending on the product that you wanted to sell. This is especially true for difficult-to-handle items such as potions. To raise your rank, you can acquire rank points by selling potions to our guild, and when you accumulated a certain number of points you will be promoted. -The higher the rank, the more preferential treatment you will receive, so please aim for a higher rank!"
I don't have a problem with a low rank because I don't plan on owning a store at the moment, even if they have a preferential treatment to those in the higher rank. The guild is the only place where I can sell my potions, so if I sell it to them, my rank will go up on its own. As I don't want to stand out, so I'm fine with keeping a low rank.
I'm curious about the products that can be purchased, but since the guild is a wholesaler, I'm assuming they mean products to be sold in a store. If that's the case, I don't need it because I don't want to own a store.
But still, giving priority to high ranks means that the big merchants can buy goods as they like, right? Are big traders a monopoly business? If that's the case then small and medium-sized merchants couldn't compete with that. Well, it's none of my business, so I don't really care.
"I will continue to explain about the purchase of the potion. The normal purchase window is from number two to five window, or if you're guild rank is C or higher and you have an exclusive receptionist then you can use the number twenty window. However, the purchase of potions is a special purchase, so please use the first window or dedicated staff. Also the higher your rank is, the higher we will purchase your goods. So please do your best to raise your rank."
I know you're trying to tell me to work hard and bring a lot of stuff, but there's a limit to the number of potions I can make, so my hard work won't help you. Well, I don't mind if it's a relatively cheap price, as long as it's an amount I can live without.
Well, it says here that this is the 22nd window. Does that mean this women is a dedicated staff member? Then why is she dealing with me? As she just said that you can only have an exclusive staff member if you are rank C and above.
"If you are curious why I'm the one dealing with you it's just that when an exclusive receptionist is not busy with clients they can also entertain with talented newcomers. If Yamato-sama hadn't said he was going to sell potions, I would have sent him to another window."
"Wow that's pretty straight forward. Then can I sell you my potions as well?"
"I am sorry. I will only be in charge of purchases after Yamato-sama has reached the rank of C. I am sorry for the delay in telling you my name, but I am Milis, one of the exclusive receptionists for our guild. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
"Thank you very much for your kind attention. I am Yamato, and I just came to this city today. My goal is to live a low-ranked, carefree, so I'm afraid I won't be able to meet your expectations, but I look forward to working with you."
"Fufufu, please don't joke around... *Gohon* well it looks like Yamato-sama and I are going to be friends for a long time. So let's meet again soon."
Well, I'm sure I'll see her again when I come to the guild to sell potions, but what the heck, Milis-san guides me out of the room and I returned to the hall.
